Public Space Regeneration Project for the Sewoon Shopping Center District

The Sewoon Shopping Center area is a place where an immense number of small-scale activities and vibrant forms of everyday life unfold at high density, revealing the authentic patterns of life in Korea. The Sewoon Shopping Center complex sits at the heart of this complex and dynamic neighborhood, yet exists as though detached from it. The Sewoon Urban Walk should reconnect the complex with the surrounding city and become a catalyst for the revitalization of both the neighborhood and the buildings themselves.

The Sewoon Urban Walk is part of the city’s infrastructure system and is located within an area undergoing ongoing urban transformation. As infrastructure, the walk should be capable of actively responding to change while supporting the continuous evolution of its surroundings. Once any section of the urban walk is disconnected, its functional role as public space is lost, creating severe breaks between the different levels of the Sewoon Shopping Center. The urban walk must therefore function as a flexible infrastructure capable of adapting to changing needs over time.
