Sejong Presidential Office Construction Project

This design proposal for the Sejong Presidential Office Construction Project aims to establish a new form of national space that embodies an order of relationships and communication, rather than serving as a symbol of power. Located within the National Symbolic District of Sejong’s Multifunctional Administrative City, the project seeks to create a place that reflects the values of a mature democratic society.

Set against Mount Wonsu, the site forms a “national landscape” where nature and architecture are brought into harmony. Moving beyond conventional approaches that expressed authority through a singular axis and symmetry, the design adopts a three-dimensional spatial composition shaped by shifting perspectives and a sequence of spatial scenes. Drawing on the traditional Korean architectural concept of “chae and madang”—buildings and courtyards—the design allows architecture and exterior spaces to connect organically through walls, planting, water features, and other landscape elements.

The southern portion of the site provides pedestrian access for citizens and an open public courtyard, while the northern portion is reserved for potential future expansion. Conceived as a presidential office that communicates with the civic spaces of the National Symbolic District, the project aims to become a symbolic place that embodies the values of a mature democratic society and fosters a sense of civic pride.
